Hana Korea

Appetizers: pickled radish, kimchi, tofu, edamame and glass noodles.

Dumplings (J) We got steamers to not aggravate our stomachs. (S) The texture of the wrap had a good chew, and it wasn't soggy. I liked that.

Dolsot Bibimbap (S) I always get the same thing, only because I know I will undoubtedly like it. I usually don't like to touch the food until the rice has crisped up, but the rice came separately.

Gamjatang (J) I'm always eager to eat this and burn my tongue. There was a huge bone with lots of meat at the bottom! Not at all spicy. (S) I agree, not spicy so that I could eat it and it was delicious. The meat was so soft and fall-off-the-bone good.

Man Doo Hyang

Appetizer: dumplings/wontons. (J) Haven't had these as an appetizer before. A good warm up for things to come. (S) Complimentary dumplings are always nice.

Deep Fried Dumplings: beef and beef & kimchi. (J) Apparently you have to pre-order these because they sell out really fast. Outside was crispy, and filling was big and meaty. (S) You don't know which ones are spicy; they're mixed together. I had to open them up to see which ones had the red flecks (spicy) and which ones didn't. They (the non-spicy ones) were so good tho!

Noodle Soup: with dumplings. (J) Nice big bowl. I liked the chewy noodles and starchy broth. You only got three dumplings, but they were huge like the fried ones. (S) The noodles were cooked really well. I liked my beef dumplings, yumm!

Lunch: bamboo shoots, year cake, soup dumplings, soup noodles, sticky rice, green onion pancake, Chinese broccoli, pot stickers, red bean cake. (J) Everything tasted good while I was eating, but afterwards I was burping up grease all day. I learned to nip the tip of the dumpling sac, which allows it to cool without spilling its juices. (S) This meal did not sit well in my stomach. My stomach is not great with super greasy foods, which is what Shanghai-nese food is known for. It all tasted great though.

Dumpling King

Location: Unit 23 - 15 Northtown Way, North York, ON M2N 7A2
Phone: (416) 226-6818

Appetizers: Tofu with Onion (left) and Beef with Flavour (right). (J) There were three of us, so we ordered a whole bunch of stuff to share. Tofu was good like before. Our first time trying beef with flavour, and it tasted just like beef. There was lots of it. (S) The tofu is good, a bit spicy...beef is meh, way too much of it.

Mains: fried beef (?) dumplings (left), steamed seafood and steamed pork (?) dumplings (middle x2), and noodles with meat slices (right).

(J) Deep frying dumplings really locks in the juice, so that when someone bites into them, they squirt across the table! They were good, but heavy on the stomach. I still prefer steamed dumplings. Noodles seemed homemade and firm. The broth was clean. (S) I liked the fried dumplings...I kinda wanted to eat more of it haha. I like the solidness of the steamers, but the pried were crispier and super juicy!

Braised Beef Noodle Soup: (S) The noodles had good bite. A lot of the chunks of meat too fatty for me to eat :s (J) It was good overall, but the temperature was lukewarm. I like my soup to come out bubbling hot, especially on a cold day.

Steamed Mini Pork Dumplings: (S) We've had several recommendations for the dumplings here, so we gave it a try. The xiao long baos had a good burst, but tasted kinda fatty. (J) Lots of juice inside, and the filling was (fatty) soft. Doesn't beat our original Dumpling King though.

Sweet & Sour Fish: side dish. (S) This was surprisingly tasty! We were dipping the dumplings in this sauce. (J) Crispy tender fish in yummy sauce.

Beef & Carrot and Vegetarian: steamed dumplings. (S) I really like beef & carrot, but the vegetarian dumplings weren't bad! The dumpling wrappers have such good texture. Steamers are best! (J) I was happy with the vegetarian dumplings. Gotta try them all!

Shredded Potato: appetizer. (J) Served in string form just like the tofu appetizer. Had a light taste. (S) I liked the refreshing appetizers here. This one was pretty good.

Steamed Dumplings: Beef with carrot (middle) and chicken with vegetable (right). (J) I ordered beef with carrot, but I didn't see any carrots. The beef was really good though. The chicken was dense and my least favourite of all the dumplings. (S) The chicken didn't have much taste, but the beef was really good. My faves are anything beef and pork.

Red Bean Ice Sandwich: from the convenience store. Comes in a new red package! (J) I think it's from the same company, and it tastes the same. I enjoy eating my fish friend. (S) So good.

Side dishes: kimchi, glass noodles, potato and cucumber. (J) They gave each of us our own dish instead of many little dishes. I like the water jugs. (S) Good sides.

Dolsot Bibimbap: beef, vegetables and egg. Rice and hot sauce on the side. (J) Filling. (S) I like crispy rice, so yummy!

Combo A: chicken teriyaki, beef dumplings and vegetable tempura. (J) The teriyaki sauce was good. Some pretty unusual tempura that I've never had before, such as mushroom and pepper. (S) I like veggie tempura, the chicken was pretty good too!

Cucumber with Flavour: side dish. Cucumber with carrots, garlic and chili flakes. (J) The description was pretty vague. What would "flavour" be? I liked the garlic and chili flakes. I prefer their tofu side dish though. (S) Felt refreshing.

Steamed Dumplings: seafood and pork & napa. (J) Both plates of dumplings look exactly the same, so that's why there's only one picture. Good skin and lots of filling. (S) We always get the same ones, they're both so good. We liked ours Steamer; Boiled and Pried (Fried) aren't as yummy. I dunno about the Vegitanian ones either. Ohh engrish.

Shanghai Dim Sum: cold soybean drink, hot and sour soup, steamed dumplings, vegetables, rice cake; desserts: sesame dumplings in fermented rice soup, black sesame soup, and some pastry; not shown: noodles, chicken with cashews, beef with onion.

(J) I didn't order so I don't know some of the ingredients. The dumplings were really good and filled with juice that burst in your mouth. I also liked the vegetables that had a strong garlic flavour. The fermented rice soup was interesting, and tasted a little like alcohol. (S) I liked the Xiao Long Bao, and the Chow Nian Gao...doesn't beat my grandma's though. The fermented rice wasn't as intolerable as how my mom likes to make it. Not as putrid. I didn't mind this one at all.

Tofu with Onion: appetizer. Strands of tofu with green onions, chili peppers and some sort of meat (imitation crab?). (J) I've never seen tofu in noodle form. It was quite good. (S) I liked this too.

Pork & Napa Dumplings: boiled. (S) First few tasted good, but then they started getting really watery.

Seafood Dumplings: steamed. (J) Tasted good, and not watery like the boiled dumplings. (S) Yea, I suggest steamed dumplings instead of boiled.

Red bean ice sandwich: dessert from the convenience store across the street again. (J) Always a good dessert. (S) Brain Freeze!

Pedestrian Sunday

Doubles: from Patty King. (S) These doubles were ok, can't beat the first one we tried!

Chicken empanada: from Segovia La Casa Del Chorizo. (J) Piping hot! Didn't really taste the filling. (S) Yumm...crunchy outside.

Soup: from Urban Herbivore. Black bean soup du jour. (J) Nice and hearty, spicy and sweet. (S) Too spicy for me, but the heat was nice on a rainy day.

Momos: from Tibet Cafe. Beef and vegetable, served with salad. (J) Tasted like dumplings. (S) Yep, just like dumplings.

Beef empanada: from El Gordo Fine Foods. (J) The perfect temperature to wolf down. It had two olives. (S) So good! I liked the crusty outside and the beefy inside.

Chocolate chip cookie: from My Market Bakery. (J) Dry and crumbly. (S) Not bad. Tasted healthy?

Sweet empanada: from Segovia La Casa Del Chorizo. Filled with ricotta cheese and dulce de leche. (J) Sounded weird but tasted good. I would get one of these after two regular empanadas for an empanada meal! (S) It was interesting, now I wanna try the banana chocolate one, or the apple and cinnamon.

Mini cupcakes: from Miss Cora's Kitchen. Carrot cake (left) and red velvet (right). (J) So tiny. I liked the red velvet's icing. (S) I liked the red velvet too! They were so greasy, good thing they're tiny.
