Texas Burger Combo: with fries upgraded to a poutine, and Diet Coke. (S) We felt like we didn't get enough poutine in Montreal, so we settled on some Burger Palace poutine. No cheese curds :s The burger was juicy though! (J) Yeah no curds, but the portion was big. It tasted like truck fries. The burger was quite satisfying.

Miso Soup: (J) Each soup had one piece of mushroom. (S) I believe this was "add hot water" soup mix.

Hand Rolls: spicy (left) and crispy (right). (J) These were included with each order, which you don't usually see as an included app. Both were good. (S) I liked the crispy one!

Chapchae: (J) Another app you don't usually see unless you go to a restaurant that serves both Japanese and Korean foods. (S) Very Korean. Very Yummy.

Double Dragon Bento: (J) I think they were red dragon (left) and green dragon (right). I couldn't read the details of the sign on the wall. The salmon and tempura shrimp rolls were really good. (S) The presentation of the rolls was pretty cool.

Salmon Lover Bento: (J) Nigiri were good. Odd numbers made it hard to share. (S) Mmm...eel.

Cherry Ice Cream: (J) No flavour options, but this was different, not your regular green tea or red bean. (S) The ice cream was refreshing.

Bourbon Whopper Combo: Bourbon flavoured sauce, onion rings, bacon and cheddar cheese. (J) I couldn't taste the onion rings. (S) I liked the sauce, it had a mesquite flavour.

Steakhouse Burger Combo: Angus beef patty, crispy onions, cheddar cheese and steak sauce. (J) I preferred this burger. The meat and sauce tasted good, and the onions were crispy. Good dinner on the road. (S) I was so hungry at this point, I almost ate more than half the burger!

Midi Go

Chicken Club Burger: breaded and fried chicken breast. Served with traditional coleslaw, fries and sauce. (J) I liked the crispy chicken breast. Coleslaw was tangy. (S) The chicken burger was pretty good. I liked dunking the fries in the gravy.

Quarter Chicken (Leg): served with salad, a piece of bread, creamy coleslaw and sauce. (J) Chicken was a little pink inside. The sauce tasted like poutine gravy, and was less viscous compared to Swiss Chalet. (S) I liked the creamy coleslaw better than the traditional. I'm sure it was fattier too. Mmm...fat. The chicken was really good too.

Vanilla Cake: topped with cream sugar sauce, served with tea. (J) Sweet. (S) I asked for the fruit sauce, but I guess our waitress didn't hear me. This was pretty good though, very sweet indeed. Here I come diabetes.

Chômeur Pudding: served with tea. (J) Tasted like butter tart filling. (S) Yup, never had this kind of pudding before so J decided to get it just to try.

Coco Vanil': vanilla cream and Oreo cookie crumbs. (S) They messed up my order for this one. Their combo numbers on the board outside doesn't correspond to the one inside. This beaver tail wasn't as well deserved as the other, but still so good! (J) Pretty good, but not as good as the Reese one.

Triple Trip: chocolate, peanut butter and Reese's Pieces. (S) *drools...this was SOOO good after 6 hrs of snowboarding non-stop. The peanut butter came out of a ketchup squeeze bottle, which freaked me out a little. (J) This really hit the spot. Gooey peanut butter and chocolate went well with the crunchy candies.

Tofu Bourgeois & Poutine: (S) I really liked the tofu bourgeois so much that I got it again. Unfortunately, this was the only poutine we had this trip. Yumm...cheese curds. (J) I liked the poutine, the black olive actually worked with it. Tofu was nice and firm.

BLT & Salad: (S) The bacon was nice and crispy, and the salad was refreshing. J ordered a Soupe à l'oignon but it never came. This entire post cost $12 total for quality food. (J) Nice crusty bread. Yeah I wonder what happened to my soup.

Sausage McMuffin with Egg: combo served with hash brown and orange juice. (J) Mmm cheesy. (S) Can't go wrong with this breakfast combo. Notice the granite countertops...in McD??? Yea, Brockville has a nice McD.

Big Breakfast: sausage, eggs and English muffin served with hash brown and orange juice. (J) This was like a deconstructed sausage egg McMuffin. Greasy breakfast hit the spot. The decor was really nice at this location too. (S) Yup, can't agree more.

TRA Christmas Party 2009

Appetizers

Penne Primavera Pommadora: sauteed mushrooms, peppers, onions, sun-dried and diced tomatoes, served in a tomato, basil sauce. (S) I remember liking this, the sauce was nice. (J) This was the better app, more substantial.

Caprese Salad: fresh tomatoes and bocconcini cheese on a bed of mixed greens, topped with a basil vinaigrette. (S) I generally like cheese on tomatoes but this cheese kinda tasted like nothing. (J) The whole thing tasted like nothing.

Entrées

Salmon Fillet: grilled, topped with a Provencal sauce, served with rice and vegetables. (S) The salmon was really good. I liked the crispy skin underneath the moist meat. (J) Good salmon, and the berries on top gave it some tang.

Veal Marsala: sautéed veal scaloppini, topped with a Marsala wine, mushroom demi-glaze, served with potatoes and vegetables. (S) This was pretty good too. People were raving about it. (J) I don't usually eat veal so I don't know if it was good, but others were saying it was fantastic, so it must have been!

Desserts

Raspberry Vanilla & Coconut Tartufo: (S) I wasn't a big fan of the coconut texture, and there was too little raspberry. (J) It was alright.

Chocolate Eggnog Tartufo: (S) Yummm. This one was the better dessert. (J) The eggnog and chocolate flavours were an interesting mix, but in a good way.

Braised Beef Noodle Soup: (S) The noodles had good bite. A lot of the chunks of meat too fatty for me to eat :s (J) It was good overall, but the temperature was lukewarm. I like my soup to come out bubbling hot, especially on a cold day.

Steamed Mini Pork Dumplings: (S) We've had several recommendations for the dumplings here, so we gave it a try. The xiao long baos had a good burst, but tasted kinda fatty. (J) Lots of juice inside, and the filling was (fatty) soft. Doesn't beat our original Dumpling King though.

Pizza & Salad: vegetarian pizza (zucchini, peppers and feta cheese on whole wheat) and garden salad with Italian dressing. (J) Pizza tasted healthy. Salad had tons of dressing on it, which made it very tangy. (S) The guy poured too much dressing on the salad. The pizza was kinda soggy, had to support the bottom at multiple points in order for it to not flop over.

Panini & Soup: turkey club panini sandwich (turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) and some sort of vegetable soup with pasta. (J) Panini was good. Soup had a special name that I forgot. I liked that it had lots of vegetables. (S) Someone spilled the soup but covered it up nicely :P Very hearty soup, filled me up, couldn't finish my half of the sandwich. The bacon was kinda soggy I think.

Cheesecake: free birthday cheesecake with some berry sauce and a tomato on top. (S) I was feeling for some chocolate cake, but that's ok. Free cheesecake is pretty good too. (J) The tomato on top was weird, but the cheesecake was good.

Complimentary Bread

Wild Mushroom Pizza: "brie cheese, wood-fire roasted button, oyster + portobello mushrooms, fresh basil" with cranberry juice. (S) OMG, this pizza was so good. The crust was so thin and crispy, and held all the ingredients very well. The mushrooms and cheese were a good mix. (J) I really enjoyed the brie and meaty mushrooms. It was very satisfying without being too heavy on the stomach. Thanks to Vincent for the free coupon!

Linguini Pollo e Pesto: "grilled chicken, pesto cream sauce, plum tomatoes, pine nuts, parmesan." (S) I really liked the extra nutty texture. (J) Creamy and delicious.

Wild Salad: "Crisp fresh greens, tomatoes, red onions and topped with our signature cheese blend and croutons." Served in a fried tortilla bowl with Italian dressing. (J) I would have liked more lettuce. Onion breath! Haaaaah. (S) They gave us the wrong salad, but owell. The bowl tasted kinda like Chinese fried dough.

Saddle Up: "Gar Par & Buttermilk Dill" single serving (1 lb) of wings. (J) The subtle dill flavour was good. (S) Oh man, this one was such messy goodness.

Dry Cajun: "From the Deep South" single serving (1 lb) of wings. (J) Like KFC but not as salty. (S) Fried Southern goodness. I was soooo full, like painful bursting.

Winter Magic: Ice, Wine & Dine

Location: Elm Street, Toronto ON
Website: http://www.wintermagic.ca/icewinedine

Cheese & Spinach Pies ($4): from Eggsmart. (S) I am always up for yummy spinach pies! (J) We took bites to show the insides. They were cold but still tasty.

Sampling Plate ($5.65): from Commensal Vegetarian Cuisine. (S) Oh man, this was soooo good! I wonder what dressing they used on the spinach salad, it was really good. The bean salad was super! Sweet potatoes, burrito and tofu were really good too! (J) I like how they make vegetables taste so good.

Mini Pot Roast Sandwich ($4) & Mini Deep Fried Mars Bar ($1): from Duke of Somerset. (S) The sandwich tasted really good and fatty with the horseradish mayo. We were OMG-ing with one bite of the mars bar. Soooo good! (J) I liked the hamburger bun. The Mars bar was so warm and creamy, and the perfect guilt-free portion size.

Hot Chocolate & Apple Muffin ($5): from Fresh Start Coffee. (S) We replaced coffee with hot chocolate and it was really good on a cold day (although it really wasn't too cold). We didn't want to ruin our appetite, so we didn't eat the muffin. I'm excited to eat it later though. (J) The guy had to leave us alone and run across the street to get a small mixing pot to make our hot chocolate. It was so bizarre and funny.

Chicken Satay & Spring Rolls ($5): from Bangkok Garden. (S) The fried spring roll was the best item on this dish; nice and crunchy. The rice rolls had a lot of cilantro, enough said. Chicken wasn't bad. (J) Way too much cilantro in the rice rolls. Chicken was dry. Spring rolls were awesome.

Butter Chicken & Garlic Naan ($3): from Delta Chelsea Hotel, served with complementary apple cider. (S) I miss Naan and curry! This was really good! There was a good amount of chicken for a sample. (J) Pretty good for $3. Cider was like really good and warm apple juice.

Shrimp Fritter ($1): from Adega Restaurant. (S) More dough than shrimp. Fried things always taste good though. (J) There was sauce inside, or the shrimp was sweating.

Chili & Garlic Bread ($5): from Wolf & Firkin Pub. (S) Ohh man, the lady filled this bowl up until it was overflowing. It had a bit of spice to it, but I recently started to really like those beans so I ate it anyways. (J) So much chili! I was filled.

Gingerbread & Apple Cider (Free): from The Queen and Beaver Public House. (S) Not a big fan of the gingerbread, too gingery for me. (J) I like free. I wonder if the cider was the same as from the Delta Chelsea hotel because they tasted the same.

Cupcake ($1): from Pretty Sweet, sold at Arm Candy Casa. (S) So cute! It was a 1-bite cupcake, yumm. (J) So tiny.

Mushroom Risotto ($5): from Donatello Restaurant. (S) I waited a long time for this and by the time we got it we were so full...but we stuffed it down anyways. It was pretty good! I liked the mushrooms. (J) The mushrooms were plump and juicy. The rice had a nice firmness and I think a hint of cheese.

Side Dishes: pickled vegetable, kimchi, fried tofu, bean sprouts, and potatoes. (S) The fried tofu was really good, too bad it wasn't refill-able like the other dishes were. (J) Potatoes were peppery.

Dolsot Bibimbap: served with miso soup. (S) Yumm...I really like bibimbap. I liked how this one was flavourful; I've had bland ones before. (J) The special sauce was sweet. Apparently it's the most expensive sauce they have, made from many ingredients.

Gamja Tang: spicy pork bone soup, served with rice. (S) Spiiiicy, I did not dare to try. (J) Mmm made me sweat.

Quiche & Salad: vegetarian broccoli & cheese quiche and salad. (S) I loaded the salad, yumm. The quiche was pretty good. I want to make it! I need a working oven. (J) I think we were supposed to use a small bowl for the salad instead of a big plate haha.

Organic Pasta: with garlic bread. (S) Apparently this dish is on sale for a limited time...of several years. The pasta wasn't super fresh, some of the tubes were hard and crusty. The garlic bread tasted like frozen. (J) I was hungry so I didn't even notice if the bread was stale, and I enjoyed the chewy pasta bits.

Apple Pie: (J) The pie had custard at the bottom. I liked the sweet crumbly on top. (S) The custard bottom was good. I want to make this!
